Built with prefabricated construction and energy-efficient technologies, the building will adhere to Zhuhai’s “sponge city” initiative for responsible stormwater management and is expected to achieve two stars within China’s Green Building Evaluation Standard. Waste heat recovery systems will also help reduce water usage.
Designed with reusability in mind, the building takes cues from the British motor car manufacturer’s hand-built sports cars that are constructed from three recyclable core elements: ash timber, aluminum and leather. Timber and easily recyclable aluminum flashings were used for the cladding and are detailed for easy dismantling and recycling.
All stormwater is managed onsite and is either funneled through underground pipes to native plantings or absorbed into the onsite subsurface. Located in a flood plain, the house takes the form of two floating, modern glass boxes that are elevated yet accessible with a ramp.
CITE also features a building integrated solar array, stormwater management cisterns, a biodiverse landscape design, locally sourced, recycledmaterials wherever possible and increased use of FSC-certified wood finishes for lowered embodied carbon.
Plywood walls and a sealed fiber-cement ceiling reference the exterior materials and lend a sense of warmth to the interiors. Recycled “Grey Ironbark” hardwood columns and beams are also featured throughout the building. For energy efficiency, the Colorbond tray deck roof is fitted with a 10.26 kW photovoltaic system.
A Preferred Materials and Fibers List is continually updated with new research to help Fjällräven choose the highest quality and most sustainable materials. The brand prioritizes using organic, renewable, and recycledmaterials whenever possible.
