By Sarah Casey, Portfolio Director, Climate Council. Since 2011, annual global energy transition investment (renewable energy, CCS, electrified transport, hydrogen, electrified heat, energy storage) has almost doubled, from $290b to $501b. Between 2015 and 2018, emerging markets accounted for an increasingly larger share of this investment, yet high-income economies have accounted for the majority since 2018.
There’s no longer any need to ask if heat waves are influenced by climate change. On Monday, temperatures in Washington and Oregon soared to well over 100 degrees Fahrenheit, crushing records and leaving locals — many of whom don’t have air conditioning — struggling to find shelter from the suffocating heat. In Seattle, fans and air conditioning units were sold out at major retailers as temperatures reached an all-time high of 106 degrees Fahrenheit, marking an unprecedented third straight day o
We spend most of our time on this show talking about what's happening in climate tech. What technologies, business models, and markets are being developed? By whom? And how much impact will they ultimately have on decarbonization? But there's an equally interesting topic. What isn't happening? In other words, where is the white space? What areas, technologies, or markets need more attention?

Addressing biodiversity authentically and effectively. Takeshi Yamada. Tue, 06/29/2021 - 00:10. Biodiversity provides humanity and our economies with the resources needed to thrive. However, the planet is experiencing a great loss of biodiversity due to overfishing, deforestation and pollution. Humans and our planet’s ecosystem are inextricably linked and as our planet warms, the threat to ecosystems is a threat to us.
The International Energy Agency published a roadmap for decarbonizing the global energy sector by 2050. Their requirements call for unlikely actions on the part of the world. They downplay nuclear and make unachievable goals for changes in energy use like the rate of electric vehicle penetration.
Victoria Judd, a lawyer at Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman LLP, considers the sustainability credentials of biomass, and what this bodes for its future. In the aftermath of BREXIT and in view of COP26 in Glasgow in November 2021, the UK has been focussing on decarbonisation in relation to its infrastructure and power offerings. Multiple initiatives have been launched: the UK Infrastructure Bank has been set up to prioritise investment in projects that tackle climate change, there are efforts to
Inside Hewlett Foundation’s plan to electrify all road transportation by 2050. Liz Morrison. Wed, 06/30/2021 - 02:00. Foundations , celebrity philanthropists and tech giants alike have announced plans this year, with grand sums of money attached, to combat climate change. Collecting waste in Lubango, Angola (image credit: Carsten ten Brink , CC BY-NC-ND 2.0 license ). For decades, wealthy nations have transported plastic trash, and the environmental problems that go with it, to poorer countries, but researchers say they have found a potential bright side to this seemingly unequal trade: plastic waste may provide an economic boon for the lower-income countries.
Solar energy is a reliable source of renewable energy. The benefits of solar power cannot be understated. It is clean and provides independence from power utility companies. A direct benefit to those who have installed solar panels is a reduction in the cost of power. In some cases, solar-powered buildings do not pay any electric. The post Who benefits from Solar Net Metering?

With the first wave of the energy transition, renewable energy sources (such as solar and wind) have begun replacing coal power generation. However, some sectors are lagging behind and struggling to decarbonize more than others, including large-scale transportation like commercial aviation, shipping, and rail transit. Electrofuels (aka eFuels) are the next generation of solutions to help the hardest-to-abate sectors pivot from their reliance on fossil fuels.
Video production has arguably become one of the most influential industries in the world, meaning media companies need to be more conscious about the impact they have on people and the environment. Right now, prominent media companies are already setting the stage for sustainable business practices in the industry, so it is imperative that smaller companies follow suit or they may fall behind and miss out on the opportunities that come with being green.
