Tidal energy firm Orbital Marine Power (Orbital) has been awarded an Option Agreement from Crown Estate Scotland for a new tidal energy project in the Westray Firth. Orkney-headquartered Orbital also confirmed it has a grid connection in place to service the project, which is located adjacent to the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) facility, where Orbital has already deployed the 2MW O2, said to be the world’s most powerful tidal turbine, under commercial operation.

Wildlife charity Sea Life has rescued and rehabilitated 636 seals over the past 10 years with its rescue teams based at Scarborough and Hunstanton, and is seeking to raise the profile of its work on International Day of the Seal (22 March). Staff have spent around 500 hours on average caring for each individual seal, says the group. Seals require rescuing for several reasons, which can include pups getting separated from their mum, injury, or an outbreak of disease.

LG Innotek has introduced an 800-volt wireless battery management system (BMS) that it says can greatly increase battery performance. LG’s new wireless BMS has a communication module that integrates an RF communication chip and antenna into one unit. LG says that removing hundreds of BMS wires and connectors from a battery pack can allow vehicle weight to be reduced by 66~198 Ib, and battery pack space to be increased by 10-15%.
