Renewables are on course to meet almost half of global electricity demand by the end of this decade, according to a new IEA report, with solar as the leading approach. Due to supportive policies and favourable economics, the world’s renewable power capacity is expected to surge over the rest of this decade, with global additions on course to roughly equal the current power capacity of China, the European Union, India and the United States combined, according to a new IEA report on 9 October.

Community energy group hopes for local electricity trading as part of its ‘better system’ of supply and ownership In the shadow of the Didcot power station in Oxfordshire, a small group of people sat around a kitchen table and thought “let’s replace it” with green community energy. That was in 2011. Now, in 2024, that little group has become the Low Carbon Hub with 1,773 members and 55 renewable energy installations around Oxford, including two hydroelectric dams on the River Thames.

Some great news in childhood and environmental health: A new EPA rule requiring utilities to remove all lead water pipes in 10 years The industry says, unsurprisingly, it will cost a lot — the EPA estimates it will take about $45 billion over a decade. For fun, let’s double that and call it about $10 billion per year. That’s less than the $12B Americans spend on Halloween annually ($3.6B just on candy), and the $11B the US oil and gas industry spent just on exploration last yea

Hydrogen is expected to play a key role in shifting heavy-duty industries away from fossil fuels. But today’s methods for making hydrogen are either carbon-intensive — such as steam methane reforming with fossil gas — or currently cost-prohibitive, like using huge amounts of renewable energy to split water molecules.

With the first wave of the energy transition, renewable energy sources (such as solar and wind) have begun replacing coal power generation. However, some sectors are lagging behind and struggling to decarbonize more than others, including large-scale transportation like commercial aviation, shipping, and rail transit. Electrofuels (aka eFuels) are the next generation of solutions to help the hardest-to-abate sectors pivot from their reliance on fossil fuels.
