Using sunlight to recycle black plastics

Envirotec Magazine

Inside this reaction vial, spotlit by concentrated sunlight, a piece of black polystyrene from a foam tray breaks down into a recyclable material (image credit: Hanning Jiang). Black foam and black coffee lids, which are often made of polystyrene, usually end up in landfills because colour additives lead to ineffective sorting. Now, a US group has shown that the use of an additive in black plastics can allow sunlight or white LEDs to break down black and colored polystyrene waste into reusable m

It’s not uncommon to see blazing headlines in newspapers and magazines, not to mention on the local evening news, reporting yet another electric vehicle fire. With so many reports, one might think that EVs self-immolate on a regular basis at a far higher rate than automobiles powered by internal combustion engines (ICEs). In actuality, it turns out that the reverse is true: the risk of an internal-combustion-engine vehicle fire is between 20 and 80 times greater.
