With this bumpy year for nuclear coming to a close and the world’s energy stakeholders having just gathered for the most nuclear-focused COP meeting ever , it’s a good time to assess the state of atomic power in the U.S. Government pledges and consumer support for nuclearpower in the U.S.
While the COP 28 commitment to triple nuclearpower by 2050 has been questioned as whether it is an attainable goal, progress is taking place in building new nuclear plans, as well as standing up the supply chain for them, and for small modular reactors.
As we reported last month at COP 29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, the Government Pledge to triple global nuclear by 2050 added six new signatories bringing the total number of countries who have signed the pledge to 31. Support for nuclearpower to both meet countries’ clean energy and energy security goals has never been stronger.
The IPCC recently conducted a study into the combined effects of all the agreed targets of the countries taking part in the ongoing COP talks. Attempting to maintain business as usual (which is the only type of solution that will be debated at COP 26) will only make things worse. Whatever does come out of COP won’t be enough.
The plan promised to deploy a combination of policy interventions and funding to accelerate the UK development of offshore wind, green hydrogen, nuclearpower, electric vehicles, public and active transport, green aviation and shipping, energy efficiency, carbon capture and storage, natural carbon sinks, and clean tech innovation and green finance.
COP president Sultan Al-Jaber, head of the UAE’s state oil company, faced accusations of using his position to promote fossil fuels. Along with Vogtle Unit 4, these are the first newly constructed nuclear units built in the United States in more than three decades. Growth in U.S.
In a wide-ranging appearance before the BEIS Committee, Kwarteng also defended the government's support for nuclearpower, reiterating hopes that Hinkley Point C would come online by 2025 and act as a forerunner for another major nuclear project, as well as a fleet of small modular rectors developed in future.
Push decision-making hampered the ability of the technicians at the nuclearpower plant in Fukushima to address conditions that were different from what the manuals, and instructions, presented. <a The expectation is that a beat cop/policeman can address a situation right on the spot?—?spotted
There were notable fresh announcements regarding business rates relief for green technology investments, £1.7bn funding for a new nuclearpower plant this Parliament, and fresh funding for skills, but these were counterbalanced by a hike in Air Passenger Duty and yet another freeze in fuel duty.

E3G campaigns director Ed Matthew said: "With no new support to save energy and by holding back on solar power and on-shore wind, this strategy will do nothing to help the UK get off Russian gas this year. Instead, the government has prioritised policies that will keep us dependent on high cost fossil fuels and nuclearpower.
What's more, by focusing on technologies like nuclearpower - which cannot supply the clean power we need in time - the natural environment will be put at further risk.". No commitments have been made to protect the seabed - a glaring absence.
Do the next best thing and read our COP reflections. In news, COP28 goes nuclear with a commitment to triple nuclear capacity and pursue fusion R&D, echoing a broader global sentiment shift towards nuclear. Nuclear is having its moment in the sun. Happy Monday!
In November, I had the privilege to represent Schneider Electric at the UN's Conference of Parties (COP) on climate change in Glasgow. This COP was unlike the previous 25 iterations, in that it took place during a global pandemic. COP is and remains, fundamentally, a policy event. One aim of the conference was to 'keep 1.5
How long since the Paris COP? Would Glasgow be able to rise to the Paris COP, or was that doomed to be a peak that never comes again? My COP-dazed mind wandered back. Even more downbeat, an expert whispered that success would simply be ensuring Glasgow is not the end of the Climate process dream altogether, the last COP.
It is vital the UK's COP Presidency shows the world we are listening to the voices of those most impacted by climate change and that we will lead global action to address their concerns, from loss and damage, to access to finance," she said.
Ship Orders Yara Eyde, a joint venture between Yara Clean Ammonia and North Sea Container Line, aims to be the world’s first clean ammonia-powered container ship. Fortescue unveiled a green ammonia dual-fuel ship at COP. Hawaii replaced its final coal-powered facility with a 565 MWh battery.
But critics counter that nuclearpower plants remain hugely costly, while the model pushes construction risk onto billpayers, meaning the levy on energy bills could apply for a decade or more before a plant starts generating power. Everything feels very last minute," one source told the paper.
We’ll spare you the obligatory “ good COP, bad COP ” joke, but this week, we’ve got a deep dive into the UN’s biggest move at COP29 so far: the approval of Articles 6.2 This approach could set a precedent for bypassing negotiation processes in future COPs, adding uncertainty to the framework.
Nuclearpower can play a significant role in the long-term, as it’s a top priority for industry and the US government, but it won’t solve short-term supply constraints. The Amazon rainforest was cut down to build a highway for this year’s COP climate summit in Brazil.
Amid all the chaos, we almost forgot it’s COP this week.) With the climate community already skeptical of this year’s COP, the election results only further diminish the credibility and leverage of the US delegation. FERC shocks Big Tech nuclear ambitions and rejects Amazon’s new power proposal.
